Jack is a British boy living on his own after his pregnant mother was murdered and his father abandoned his family. The problem is Jack is a young teen; he also has two younger sisters who depend on him to survive and be kept out of the social services system. His only help comes from Smooth Louis, a local con-artist who teaches Jack how to burgle houses.

DCI John Marvel is assigned to catch the burglar. He has problems of his own. He was demoted from a higher profile position as a homicide detective on another police force. He is known for getting results but breaks police protocol to do it. Goldilocks, as the burglar is labeled, has broken into over one hundred houses, sleeping in the owners' beds, stealing food, and taking showers. Marvel is determined to catch him with his assistants, DS Reynolds and Rice, who are alternately puzzled by and wary of their new boss. Both anxious to make a good impression, they wrong-foot themselves constantly confirming Marvel's opinion that he has been stuck in a backwater town.

Belinda Bauer's novel is well-plotted, well-written and executed. In many crime thrillers, the plot may completely dominate, and the characterizations suffer. That is not the case in this book. The reader will care about Jack from the beginning. The story is heartbreaking, chilling and real. You'll stay up to finish this book, and when you do, you'll look for another book by Bauer.

Snap Belinda Bauer Books Reviews

I will be reading more of Belinda Bauer. Her storytelling is lovely and I so enjoyed this book, my first of hers, but not my last. In fact, I’m ordering another of hers immediately.
I was looking for a good, compelling mystery but I was disappointed in this book. The p!ot really didn't get interesting until halfway through the book, then it did pick up and I pushed forward. The idea behind the p!ot was ok, but the characters really weren't developed to the point where I cared what happened to any of them.
I’m making my way through the Mann Booker long list and this one, so far, has been my favorite. First Bauer book I’ve read but I’m a big fan and definitely want more more more.
Yes, the subject matter is difficult. Yes, the author handled it with elegance and empathy. Yes, you definitely should read it.
Wonderful plot with amazing twists and turns, characters to die for, most of which would deserve a novel to themselves, tension and humor and a thoroughly satisfying read. What more could you ask for?
A very enjoyable read. It will not win the Booker prize but I am very glad I spent the day reading it. And plan on reading all the other books by Belinda Bauer.
Loved the characters, they were all so very likeable. The story is intriguing, something so different from the normal police procedural novel. I found the story engaging, I was never bored and couldn't wait to see how everything turned out. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read something other than the "normal" crime novel. What a wonderful change. I agree with Val McDermid's summary "The best crime novel I have read in a long time". The author just gets better and better with every book she writes - well done Belinda!
