Rereading a old Sci-Fi works and although some rough edges it is enjoyable still. It is more of 1920's-1940's Pacific ocean's sailing updated to Outer space.
There are few places where the scan & OCR injected some typos/errors.
Oddly it was that i I learned a lesson. These can't be read off-line and that sometimes you must go to Customer Support to get "sync'd". They did it quickly.
Don't mistake this for modern genre hard scifi, this was what our current crop of writers grew up reading... and it's great fun! Both amusing and entertaining it is representative of what the writers of the time wrote to amuse themselves and each other, as well as for sales. You will find threads and ideas here that are also found in similar light works by Clarke, Asimov, Heinlein, Anderson, Brackett, Clement, L Sprague de Camp, and so on.

This is the second volume of four in the omnibus set of John Grimes books by A. Bertram Chandler. Grimes is an officer in the Survey Service, an arm of -- of course -- a Federation. He's bluff and no-nonsense, and also rather lucky, including with women despite his lack of suaveness. Written on the order of forty years ago, these particular stories recount his discovery of so-called Lost Colonies, including one that results in a mutiny that forces him to resign from the Service and take up as ceremonial captain of a private space yacht. And those last few words will perhaps give an idea of where these tales lie in the multi-dimensional spectrum of science fiction. The first two stories in this volume, Spartan Planet and The Inheritors, aren't much to write home about. The plots are predictable and the themes a bit stale in this day and age, and in the former Grimes is relegated to the role of a minor supporting character. Things pick up a bit in The Big Black Mark, which is the tale of mutiny. Here there's a reasonable ensemble of characters, though not a lot of textured character development. The Far Traveller sees Grimes set out as the powerless skipper of a rich woman's private craft, and while it's a tale that starts out interstingly enough, for me it became flat and, once again, a bit cliche in the second half. These stories were hardly state of the art science fiction even in the early 1970s, and at least two of them have not aged well in the interim, and there is a frequent overlay of outdated sexism. Still, if you can put yourself mentally in, say, 1952, The Big Black Mark and The Far Traveller don't read half badly. You might want to see if your local library has this book, however. I did.
Difficult to get and hold my attention. I was expecting military sci-fi writing more in the line of David Weber, Eric Flint, John Ringo, Elizabeth Moon, David Drake, etc.
