Mended Overcoming Common Caregiving Dilemmas Nancy Campbell MSW 9781534680036 Books

I loved this book and really enjoyed Ms. Campbell’s writing style. It’s frank, insightful, funny and goes straight to the heart. You feel you are having a conversation with the author. Unless your parents pass unexpectedly, all children who love and respect their parents will at some point go through the experience of becoming their caregiver. In the circle of life, that is just what happens. Some children embrace the responsibility, others reject the notion and do what is absolutely the minimum to care for a sick parent. Some family stories are heart-wrenching and others just are easier. My parents have passed, but my husband’s family is now dealing with caregiving issues. As I read the book, my first thought was this experience was too easy for the author and her family …. Ms. Campbell was a professional caregiver on the National scene, with oodles of knowledge and resources available to her; dealing with a father she obviously loved, returning to her hometown where she still had friends and fond memories, for a period of months, not years like so many of us deal with. However, by the time I completed the book, it didn’t matter whether the author’s experience was a more challenging one or an easier one. I liked this story; I liked how she handled the situation; I wanted to believe more families could have a similar outcome. This book affirmed some things I did right in my caregiver journey, and it showed me some things I could have done differently and will share with my husband’s family.
Readers should be aware there are really 2 parts to the book. One is a story that reads like a historical fiction novel – you are introduced to characters, placed back in time, at points going back to real places 90 years ago, as Ms. Campbell reflected on her father’s life; The other is a non-fiction, self-help book that is filled with helpful contact information on organizations, common sense strategies, inspirational quotes and other resources. The parts melded together so well – a brilliant format in my opinion. I felt the family story was beautifully written, and the characters were likable, caring, lovely people. A previous review described it as a page-turner - It was! The self-help section was easily laid out for quick perusal.
When I learn that a friend is about to start to care for their parent, I will be sure to buy a copy of “Mended: Overcoming Common Caregiving Dilemmas . It will have a place in my permanent library. I will refer it to friends to encourage them and to provide them with ideas on what can be done so EVERYONE receives some benefit from the sad experience of losing someone you love. Whether your experience is quick or painstakingly long, there is information here that will support you. As Ms. Campbell reflects on her journey, she should feel good knowing that the epilogue to her Dad’s story (this book) might be the most helpful gift she has given. P.S. I love the $11.11 price of the book! Very funny.

Mended Overcoming Common Caregiving Dilemmas Nancy Campbell MSW 9781534680036 Books Reviews

This book is a heart-warming story of a daughter's devotion to and love for her elderly father and how she tackles the often difficult task of caregiving during the end of her father's life. Ms. Campbell's sharing of her experiences will certainly help others who find themselves in the role of caregiver, as she provides thoughtful insights and a wealth of information about resources. Since most of us will eventually either serve as caregivers or require caregiver services, this is a book that will hit home and is a must read for everyone. I marveled at Ms. Campbell's patience as she dealt with her father's declining health while still preserving his dignity and trying to provide him with a comfortable life. "Mended Overcoming Common Caregiver Dilemmas" should be on every public library's self-help shelf and should be a staple resource for home health and social service agencies. I highly recommend this book!
Who would have thought that a book about caregiving dilemmas would be such a page-turner? Nancy Campbell's book is an impressive combination of a thorough guide for caregivers (from a national expert,) along with a compelling telling of her own caregiving journey with her father during his final illness. Her advice is far from "pat," nor is it one-size-fits all. The book is compassionate, sad, sometimes hilarious and always realistic. She includes a number of stories of former clients' situations to illustrate dilemmas. She understands that even those (especially those?) within the same family can have very different opinions on how to proceed when a loved one is dying. The book has an excellent Table of Contents which can be used as a quick guide for alerting caregivers to common issues and for guiding them towards workable solutions for each of those issues. Having assisted with with caregiving for my father and for my mother-in-law, I can see that it would have been so valuable to have this exhaustive, but very readable resource. In fact, I would welcome further books on any subject from this literate, engaging author.
Well written and insightful. Enjoyed it even though it is about a painful subject for many of us.
Amazingly insightful narrative. I feel like I knew her father.
This was a terrific book, not just for caregivers but for anyone who may be caring for a relative or friend in the future. There was a wealth of information that I found helpful and insightful. It reads like a novel and is full of humor, sadness and courage. This book should be kept in your personal library and referred to often. I loved it!
I'm now starting a journey into care giving for my husband at home. He suffered a traumatic brain injury seven months ago and our lives will never be the same. When he was in the hospital for months on end I was tired; I spent much of the day with him. Everyone told me to go home since he was in good hands and wouldn't wake up anytime soon, if ever. But I felt guilty if I wasn’t by his side or was out with friends. I wanted to be the first face he saw when he woke up. Now that he's home, we are together 24/7 and it's overwhelming at times. I am exhausted, frustrated, impatient, and sometimes angry at the situation and that can come across in my dealings with him. When I feel this way I feel I’m being selfish because he’s the one who was injured. It's not his fault, it's the brain injury. Intellectually I know this but it's very hard emotionally.

This book helped me realize that I too am injured and my feelings are normal and I shouldn’t be so hard on myself. The book reads like a novel and, yet it was filled with facts and information. I related to Nancy’s story since I was living it first hand. Someday, if not now, you or someone you know will be a caretaker and this book is filled with heart warming advice.
